The valve uses a flexible diaphragm (made of rubber, PTFE, EPDM, or FPM) as both the sealing element and the fluid isolator.

When the stem moves down, the diaphragm is pressed tightly against the weir or straight-through seat - flow is shut off.
When the stem moves up, the diaphragm lifts and flow is restored.
